I only asked for good books but we got Kids Club Philippines (KCP) Dream Cart.

Appearing on my Facebook timeline, KCP supports the Filipino kids by helping them enjoy learning through their donation of storybooks and bookshelves with toys and beanbags. Kids Club Philippines is a non-government organization who only intends to help reach out to Filipino learners.

After reading their page and seeing their admirable reach out activities to some public schools in the Metro, I decided to send them an inbox and inform them on how I share with them in their vision and mission through my very own class. I told them about how I foster the value of reading to my students. I shared about our daily reading activities to promote genuine love of reading among my students. We do have our reading time every day at 12:30-1:00 PM. My students instead of playing around the school corridor under the heat of the sun, are reading storybooks of their choice and joyfully accomplish their reading logs every week.

After sometime, my students ran out of storybooks to read. That is why, I decided to share this to the Kids Club Philippines. I had the chance to chat with Ms. Ana, one of the founders of the said club. She was kind enough to respond with my inquiries and learn from my class reading activity. She thoughtfully advised me to send a formal letter addressed to Miss Evalyn, co-founder of the KCP. I immediately wrote a letter and asked my Principal to have it noted. After a couple of days, I got a response from Miss Evalyn and she informed me of the possibility of the project. She told me she had to discuss the said request with the team. It took a couple of months before I received another message from the group. They then told me that they were still working and discussing on how they would help us.

It was September 2017 when I had the chance to come to Manila to share WBT to the student teachers of St. Scholastica's College. I decided to inform KCP that I was in the Metro and I asked them if there was a chance to get the storybooks I requested them. They were kind enough to answer my text message. We scheduled a meet up and I had the chance to see and greet the three amazing women of the KCP. They brought with them some storybooks and I was really surprise how serious they were in their commitment to helping children in their unique and meaningful way. Sharing my piece of story with them, they were sincerely interested to reach out. They even told me about their plan to visit my class in Dasol. They also shared their plan to have a cart of books which can be shared to more children.

After a month, I got a private message from KCP. They showed me a cart and stuff of toys and storybooks ready to release for my class. They were willing to personally deliver the stuff from Manila to Pangasinan but due to time constraint they decided to ship the stuff in two boxes to Alaminos City. The KCP Dream Cart is officially aboard to Dasol, Pangasinan, Phoenix Cassroom.

I picked the boxes up and as I opened them, I was happy and grateful to see gems of toys and storybooks with a cart ready to use by my Grade V and VI students. Officially, the KCP gems are now in my very own classroom ready to surprise my class. Certainly, my students will enjoy reading again and have all the reasons to fill in more interesting details in their reading logs. I know that every piece in the cart will cause impact to their future in one way or another. No doubt, these pieces will contribute to how my students will creatively and intelligently mold their future. It goes without saying, it takes a helping hand to build a village.

I would like to sincerely thank the Kids Cub Philippines specially Ma’am Ana and Ma’am Evalyn for choosing to help the Filipino children. Their passion to make a difference in the lives of the Filipino Kids is unquestionably admirable. KCP is indeed a commendable organization.

To the Kids Club Philippines, Salamat po! Your kind gesture will surely help my students soar the limitless possibilities these books and stuff shall bring. Truth be told, every piece of the KCP Dream Cart is a child supported, a bright future unfolded!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03882252364824973560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285941283278270525.post-77815515633171414922017-09-08T04:00:00.001-07:002017-09-08T04:00:20.895-07:00Triple Whammy

Triple Whammy: A Learning Tool in Writing
This year, I am completely excited to elevate our WBT ride. This
set of students is all promising, unique, smart and all charming. They are all
highly driven to do new things and learn from their teachers. What I love more

and in proving themselves. They are all willing to collaborate

SuperSpeed Grammar and WH+ Questions

After my students learned the parts of speech using the Electronic SuperSpeed Grammar from Coach B, I had an AHA! moment.

Our lesson was about interrogatives-the use of WH+ questions. Everyday, we do superspeed sentence. My students must write well structured sentences with article, adjective, noun, verb, adverb and prepositional phrase.

I realized I can use their SuperSpeed sentences to generate WH+ questions.

Example:

SuperSpeed Sentence:

The amazing boy runs fast in the mountain.

WH+ Questions
Who runs fast in the mountain?
What does the boy do in the mountain?
How does the boy run?
Where does the boy run?

Answers are all in their superspeed sentence.

To practice the speaking skill of my students, I plan to use this during our teach-okay. S1 asks the question while S2 answers the question. This activity allows my students to practice the target language while mastering elementary grammar, using interrogatives and answering in complete sentences.

Indeed, the possibilities in Whole Brain Teaching never stops! It's growing and it's working! Ooohhh! Teacher heaven!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03882252364824973560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285941283278270525.post-17174246545659440242015-07-25T19:15:00.001-07:002015-07-27T06:34:38.888-07:00SuperSpeed Sentence

We are about to end our SuperSpeed Grammar lesson. This gem from Coach B offers straightforward instruction in mastering the parts of speech and in writing well structured sentences.

To turbo-charged our grammar lessons and sentence construction, we will start our SuperSpeed Sentence game. Everyday, in three minutes, students will write sentences with article, adjective, noun, action verb, adverb and prepositional phrase. For variety, I will ask them to use linking verbs or helping verbs at times.

After three minutes, they willexchange their outputs to their neighbor. Neighbor will check capitalization, punctuation, spelling and subject-verb agreement.

I will write their best time record on the board and they have to beat that everyday. This is how we will compute their record: highest score+lowest score. The purpose of this formula is to encourage them to do their best and avoid getting low scores. If the lowest score is a high score, then there is more chances of beating their records. If they beat their records, I will add 30 seconds to the time limit.

Everyday, while trying to beat their records, they will hopefully build up on writing creative sentences while mastering the mechanics of writing with subject-verb agreement.

We tried this game last week and they were all FOCUSED. It feels great seeing my students do their best...A TASTE OF TEACHING HEAVEN! Oh yeah!

PS

Your opinions matter. Please let me know if you have suggestions. Thanks!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03882252364824973560noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285941283278270525.post-26612643428854106482015-07-24T20:00:00.001-07:002015-07-25T20:16:27.676-07:00Collaboration is the Key

In our Filipino subject, I asked my students to make a movie roll featuring a fable that interests them. I grouped them randomly and after a week, they were able to come up with their outputs.

They thought it was just as simple as that. To their surprise, I told them that they will use the movie roll in their movie presentation. They have to transform the classroom into a MOVIE HOUSE.

We had a short discussion of the features of a movie house and I gave them the criteria that I will use in rating their performance: creativity, performance and teamwork. I gave them a week to prepare.

On the big day, they came in with their varied materials. They brought curtains, flashlights, speakers, scripts and other props to support their movie. The five groups amazingly showed their presentation excellently. Some also showed creative skit as their infomercials. Others acted as dubbers while some worked as technical staff. They were all cooperative.

This was our first group activity in Filipino. It was fun seeing them do their best with their teammates and displaying their creativity together.

This post might be contradicting to my earlier post about how I noticed their drive to perform. One thing I learned, this amazing group of students learn better when they collaborate with each other. Hence, I have to develop learning opportunities that suit their styles. I am planning to do a variation of WBT's teach-okay this year that will cater to group collaboration and that deserves another post.

Things are getting better this year and I hope to discover more about my students so I can provide them learning opportunities that will encourage them to perform at their best.

We ended the day with the Scoreboard. I rewarded them with TWO HUGE SMILEY POINTS on our weekly scoreboard and they responded with a MIGHTY GIGANTIC Oh yeah!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03882252364824973560noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285941283278270525.post-63172618030807914232015-07-24T06:03:00.004-07:002015-07-25T20:19:35.785-07:00SIW to the Rescue!

School year 2014-2015 was an amazing academic year for me. I had highly engaged students who were always receptive to do challenges and always willing to show improvement. They never failed me… and YES, I had a taste of teacher heaven last year. This was the year when I became certified WBT instructor. I admit I owe it to the amazing students of Dasol Central School batch 2015 who are now in their 7th grade.

However, this year seems to be a different story. I have 46 students. I can notice the apparent difference. They are not receptive to the challenges I give them. Poor enthusiasm is evidently displayed every day. There are some of them who are always willing to excel but majority shows otherwise. I see less motivation in their drive to perform excellently. Uuuhhh! Challenging class!

I wonder if I am still absorbed by my students last year and I can’t ignore but to compare my new students. What is noticeable is they are not engaged. They are not enthusiastic. They are not determined. This is my observation after our two months of the school year. I already introduced to them the basics of Whole Brain Teaching. Although they are active as we do the core of WBT but I cannot refuse to admit that something is lacking. And that is their enthusiasm to meet curriculum standards.

I didn’t introduce the Super Improver Wall yet. I plan to use it in the second semester and that will be on our fifth year. Last year, SIW was introduced three months before the National Achievement Test and it caused tremendous turbo-charged of my Whole Brain Teaching journey. It made positive impact in my classroom management. It has amazingly driven my students to perform at their very best. So I decided this year to introduce it not as early as the first semester but on the commencement of the second semester.

Nevertheless, as I continue to see the glitches in my class, as I continue to feel disappointment in their poor motivation, I am now thinking to use SIW ahead of my planned schedule. I think, this is the best way to push my pupils and drive them to improvement and excellence. As much as I want to hold-up the use of SIW, I can feel the necessity.

The Super Improver Wall is a WBT gem that fuels up everything in the classroom. It can be used to turbo-charged my pupils to excel. It is an effective motivation tool to address behavioural and academic concerns. One reason of its effectiveness I believed is it provides visual image of how one is improving. It is also a good feedback for the students of his performance in a holistic fashion.

I hope that the necessity to use SIW this year is in good timing and hopefully it will be sustained until the end of the school year. With my fellow wibbeteers around the world, I know I have the best support to keep up with challenges of the academic year and with WBT, I am positive that this year will be an amazing if not the best year for my 6th grade students!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03882252364824973560noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285941283278270525.post-80094954324881669632015-07-17T06:56:00.000-07:002015-07-17T07:00:26.566-07:00WBT Book Club Post (Chapter 1 and 2)

can collectively do this without spending a single centavo. It’s awesomely
free! That’s the good news of Whole Brain Teaching (WBT) designed by Director
Chris Biffle.

WBT can
amazingly revolutionize all the classrooms around the world. Let this do
wonders in your own classroom from here and convert our school into a
playground for children and a heaven for us teachers.

Children
become successful learners if they love what they’re doing. They have to enjoy
learning or they become challenging and struggling learners. Hence, we should
design our instruction which is child-centred. Coach B believes that the longer
we talk, the more students we lose. When we talk much, we simply tell our young
learners that our lessons are boring. And that’s a HUGE NO to achieving our
mission. Boredom is our number one opponent. It breeds inattentive and
challenging students. “We can’t teach our classes that won’t listen.” (Biffle) So
we have to make fun out of learning.

WBT
has transformed my class into highly engaged learners. It also changed my
attitude towards teaching and learning. I became more systematic,
self-reflective and more appreciative of my learners. One best thing happened;
my 6th grade class had an 8% MPS increase in the Achievement Test in
English last year. I admit, I owe it to Whole Brain Teaching. Let yours too!

I was extremely excited to meet them and experience new possibilities with these new set of 6th graders. I had wonderful batch of students last school year. I am positive that this year will be more fun and more exciting! …a new beginning that I am ready to embrace.

I handle Reading and Language both in English and Filipino this year. Teaching two languages is quite strange in my daily instruction. I don’t know how I would introduce WBT in teaching Filipino, our first language. But I must admit, I couldn't imagine teaching without WBT. I decided to write my work plan on the board. Here is a photograph of my WBT schedule.

Since English is our second language, diving into WBT with my Filipino students demanded time and practice. I had to explain each technique in the first language to make it meaningful to them. I decided to introduce two WBT techniques a day.

On Day 1, I introduced WBT’s attention getter, the “Class-Yes” technique. I asked them to be very attentive all the time. Whenever they say “Yes”, they have to stop what they’re doing, keep an eye on me and hands must be folded. Using loud and soft, fast and slow and other wacky “class-yes” versions, my students amazingly embraced the world of Whole Brain Teaching. It signaled another exciting academic year for us. Along with the “class-yes” is Rule 1, Follow directions quickly. I showed them a poster of the rule in a pocket chart. I told them that in my class, time is precious specially that we only have 60 minutes in every period. So we have to do things very quick. We practiced it with simple directions like “Raise your right hand!”, !”, “Raise your left hand!” “Stand!”, “Sit!”, and “Close your eyes.” It was a blast! They enjoyed following directions quickly.

I opened Day 2 with “Class-Yes” and a call out of Rule 1. We immediately dived into WBT’s motivator, the Scoreboard.

I posted a smiley and a frowny photo on the right corner of our chalk board and divided it with blue and red tape. I explained the only rule of the scoreboard and that was making the scorekeeper happy. I told them, I am the only scorekeeper. I become happy when I see them following the rules and seeing them learn and improve. We practiced the scoreboard by reciting the “Mighty oh, yeah!” and the “Mighty groan”. To make the rehearsal more fun, I used the “ping-pong” and the “fake” techniques. Then after the scoreboard, I introduced Rule 2, “Raise your hand for permission to speak!” with the poster displayed in a pocket chart. We practiced the rule with wrong way and right way. I alternately called out on Rule 1 and Rule 2 the whole day. Surprisingly the level of fun continued to move up!

On day 3, I called out Rule 1 and 2 alternately with other variations of “class-yes.” I used the scoreboard to give them immediate feedback on how they responded with the “class-yes”. This year, I became more particular on checking their hands folded on their desk whenever they say “Yes.” The Scoreboard continued to be very effective class motivator. I introduced Rule 3, “Raise your hand for permission to speak!” as I posted another picture in the pocket chart. Again, we practiced the rule with the wrong way and the right way. After rule 3, I introduced the class unifier-the “Mirror Words”. This is an effective tool for second language learners to practice the target language with proper diction and intonation. They love mirroring the words and the gestures.

On day 4, we continued to practice “Class-Yes”, “Mirror words” and the first three rules. I used the scoreboard to drive them in keeping up with my standards. After rehearsing on the three rules, I showed them another poster showing Rule 4, “Make smart choices!” I introduced rule 4 using “Mirror words”. Rule 4 is actually my favorite WBT rule for this is situational and extends outside the classroom or outside the school. I gave them situations on how they would apply this everyday. I told them that following the first three rules everyday are smart choices. Instead of following directions slowly, doing quickly is a smart choice. Raising hand before speaking or leaving is a smart choice. I emphasized that doing what is right is always a smart choice. Afterwards, I introduced variation of “Mirror words!”, the “Silent mirror!.” Whenever I say “Silent mirror!” they repeated it with their two fingers on their lips. This technique provides me visual assessment on how attentive the students with their gesture anchored to the concepts I teach them.

Finally, on day 5, we continued our dive to WBT and the funtricity continued to level up. I started the day with me saying “Tell your neighbour…” I told them that once in a while, they have to talk to their neighbor and tell them what I said. This is another way of assessing their level of engagement. First, I told them, “Tell your neighbor I’m ready to learn rule 5.” They did it fairly well. Then I said, “Mirror words!” and they mirrored Rule 5, “Keep your dear teacher happy!” with the poster displayed in the pocket chart. They enjoyed the gesture. I explained rule 5 by telling them that whenever they do rules 1 to 4, they're already doing rule 5. We practiced rule 5 with “Mirror words!” and “Silent mirrors!.” This also was my springboard to the next variation of “Mirror words!” the “Magic mirror!” I asked them that whenever I say “Magic mirror” they have to repeat it and say “Woop!” after. Then, they needed to mirror what I say but they have to make their own gestures. This technique engages the students while giving me a visual assessment of their comprehension using the second language.

There you have it, a detailed narrative of our first week with Whole Brain Teaching. We already have the classroom rules, “Class-Yes”, Scoreboard, “Mirror” and “Tell your neighbour…” Second week, they’re ready for the brain activator-the “Teach-Okay”, the involver-“Switch” and the focuser-“Hands and Eyes.”

It was a successful week one of the school year I must say. My students and I had fun together while observing discipline and maintaining a well-managed classroom. What a great way to commence the school year with Whole Brain Teaching. Now, we are ready to conquer the heights of the academic year with the WBT ride. Oh yeah!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03882252364824973560noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285941283278270525.post-57578330295631044602015-07-15T00:51:00.000-07:002017-02-10T17:45:40.446-08:00My WBT Journey

What an accomplishment to be in the circle of inspiring educators who are making huge difference in the lives of the children, our young generation.

It was April 22, 2015 when I officially became a Board Certified Whole Brain Teaching Instructor. With my very supportive and outstanding mentor, Andre Deshotel, WBT Executive Board Member, the Director of Whole Brain Teaching, Professor Chris Biffle and the Director of WBT Certification, Nancy Stolternberg awarded me the Certificate of Achievement as Board Certified Whole Brain Teacher. According to Director Nancy, the certificate was the 14th issued and the very first released internationally. That’s a huge WOW indeed!

I only intended to provide my Filipino 6th grade students the best learning opportunities they highly deserve but to be recognized by the Whole Brain Teaching Board of Directors is such a great privilege.

It was year 2011 when I browsed the cyberspace hoping to discover teaching techniques that would make my instruction fun and exciting. Honestly, I was bored teaching Reading and Language during my first two years. However, I was aware that a boring teacher breeds a boring class and that will lead to disinterested learners… that I couldn't accept. I thought then that I needed to do something.

With the keywords “classroom techniques” in the Google search engine, varied articles and videos appeared as I researched strategies and techniques to address my problem. With hundreds and hundreds of results, only one stood out- a video showing strange classroom techniques in a 6th grade Mathematics class. I was in awe watching the video for I couldn’t deny, the students were unquestionably engaged with the lesson. The teacher showed outstanding classroom management with techniques I couldn’t refuse to admire. After watching the video, I realized, I just discovered the best techniques for my Reading and Language class. The Youtube video linked me to the world of Whole Brain Teaching-a world filled with wonderful educational resources and supportive educators-the Wibbeteers.

From then on, I continued to watch WBT videos and downloaded free e-books from the website. I was surprised everything is free. While learning from all the videos and e-books, I employed the basics of Whole Brain Teaching- the core four. It was not a perfect first attempt. Employing the “Class-Yes” was magic. However, trying the “Teach-Ok,” the Scoreboard and the “Mirror” at first were not immediately became so easy. It was awkward. It was a struggle. But I was determined. I had to do it for I know trying those techniques would make a difference in my teaching.

Constant practice was the key. In three years, I became comfortable using the techniques until my students I realized started to enjoy my class. Seeing engagement, fun and learning among my learners, I could honestly feel what teaching heaven means.

Every year, I noticed I became better in employing WBT techniques as I continued to add more teaching tools from Whole Brain Teaching. I can fairly say that I can effectively employ the big seven of WBT, the SuperSpeed 1000, the Super Improver Wall, the SuperSpeed Grammar and some of the Brainies.

It was year 2012 when I pursued my WBT internship. I was lucky enough to have WBT Board Member Andre Deshotel to be my mentor. The best mentor for me with his remarkable words of encouragement and professional advice. I couldn’t deny, he was the reason of my WBT success.

It was school year 2014-2015 where I finally felt the definition of funtricity and teaching heaven. I had the best class of 6th grade students. They were so smart and energetic, always receptive to do challenges. They loved whole brain teaching. They were passionate in what they’re doing. Failure was strange to them. They always kept up with the classroom challenges I gave them, be it in their academics or in their behaviour.

I didn’t realize that while I and my 6th grade students were enjoying our class, one of our videos would earn admiration from the WBT Executive Board. We were able to build wonderful memories together as we enjoyed the wonders of Whole Brain Teaching and that brought us admiration and recognition. Indeed, Whole Brain Teaching is fun and learning all rolled into one!

Now, after earning the title as Board Certified Whole Brain Teaching Instructor, I am enthused to do better in my craft. I am more determined to provide my class the best learning opportunities they deserve. There are more things to learn and more skills to improve yet. However, with Whole Brain Teaching, I am certain, I am treading the right path!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03882252364824973560noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285941283278270525.post-14912277954122463122015-05-16T19:22:00.000-07:002019-12-03T14:56:01.305-08:00Ready to Soar!
